Sony STR - DE445 5.1 Amplifier ?

Q) I have heard that this amp makes a buzzing sound when used in surround mode?. Is it a loud buzzing sound and is there a way to stop it. I am thinking of buying one!!

A) There's either a manufacturer's defect and should be recalled. Or, the personal experiences may have been from those that are having interference problems within their system (possibly from the AC line).

Looking for recommendations for a 5.1 surround sound amplifier / receiver?

Q) I have 2 x Eltax liberty 5+ speakers (these were from a surround sound system originally so they will be at the back) and 2 x Mission M33i speakers, plus a generic centre set. The Eltaxes are rated at 130W per channel and the Missions at 100W. What things should I be looking out for in a good amp for these speakers? Are there any particularly good models out at the moment? The speakers are fairly entry-level standard so I am looking for an amp in the same price range, perhaps more towards the 'mid' level in case I upgrade the set. My source seperates have digital out (coax spdif and optical) - are these the best to use and should any amp definitely have these? Any other advice or recommendations would be much appreciated.

A) Your FIRST task it to locate a receiver that has enough POWER...You should just match the power to your speakers...Next you need to worry about CONNECTIVITY. How many items you want to PLUG IN to your Home Theater should match how many INPUTS are on this RECEIVER...VCR, XBOX, DVD, Tivo, etc...It's as simple as that. Don't worry about what kind of DECODERS this thing has...More than likely even the CHEAPEST receiver has all the latest software downloaded into itself. The last thing is HOW MANY SPEAKERS are you going to plug into this thing...You can, for example, 100 watts x (blank)...That is, if you've got 5 speakers, you need "100 watts x 5"...If you've got 7 speakers you'll need "100 watts x 7". But if you had to pin me down and ask, "Which one would you recommend with MY speakers"...I'd say go and DEMO the "DENON" brand...More specifically the "AVR-2807"...Here's a link to check it out: http://www.usa.denon.com/ProductDetails/3038.asp

Connecting a 5.1 surround decoder to my amplifier?

Q) I bought a used stereo amplifier (Michael Yee) and a 5.1 surround decoder (Proton SD-1000 ). I have no idea how to connect the two together, and where to connect the speaker wires for the Front, Center, Back and Sub-woofer 5.1 speakers. The amplifier has only these connection points: One RCA input plus a pair of speaker posts (+ and -) for Channel A, and the same for Channel B. The 5.1 surround decoder has the following RCA sockets (with no speaker posts): One pair each labeled Front, Center and Back. One single RCA socket labeled Sub. 4 RCA sockets under the lable "Tape": L & R "Monitor" plus L & R "Record". 1 pair of RCA sockets under the label "Input": Left & Right And, finally, one socket that looks like it may accommodate something the size of a MIC plug, or a walkman headset. It's labeled "!". I have no idea what it's for. So, my question: How do I connect the 5.1 speakers with the Amp + DVD + Surround Decoder + 5.1 speakers?

A) To run your surround processor properly for a 5.1 set-up, you will need either a 3-channel amp (to complement your 2-channel amp that you currently have), a 5-channel amp, a 5-channel A/V receiver, or 5 monoblock amplifiers. If none of the above are options are doable for you right now, in the meantime you can run the front 2 speakers in stereo. To connect your system into a stereo (or with a powered sub, a 2.1) set-up: 1) connect your Proton's LEFT and RIGHT "FRONT" RCA outputs to your amplifier's L and R input RCA terminals 2) connect your speakers to your amps L and R speaker terminals 3) set your Proton's settings to stereo, or if no stereo setting is available, 5-channel stereo and if a powered sub is used, make sure the Proton has the LFE on 4) since you only have 2-channels to work with because of your amp, you can connect your DVD player by just using the L and R terminals on your player going into the DVD L and R terminals on your Proton Once you have it all hooked up and you have sound coming out of your front speakers, adjust rear volume knobs (just above each of the two RCA output connectors you have hooked up to your amp) on your Proton to make sure the sound is even. There is one of these currently selling on eBay, so if you have an eBay account, you might want to contact this seller to see if he can give you any further "hands-on" help with it. I hope this helps.

Can I connect more than 5 speakers to my 5.1 HT system?

Q) I have two HT systems both has 5.1 channel output. But, amplifier in one of them doesn't work. Is there a way I can utilize those 5 speakers with the other HT system amplifier and make a 7.1 system? HT1 is: 720 watts with 4 ohm impedence/channel. HT2 is: 1000 watts with 3 ohm impedence/channel. What are the options?

A) The 5.1 designates the number of channels of sound the system supports. You can't get 7.1 out of a 5.1 system. (The ".1" is the sub-woofer channel.) If you put the speakers from one system in parallel with the ones in the other system, you run the risk of blowing out the second amplifier, because of the lowered impedance (that's the 4 and 3 ohm designation). I would strongly suggest NOT trying to combine the speakers into one system, but you could substitute the speakers from the "dead" system for the ones in the "live system to see if they sound any better. Your other option would be to get the amplifier in the "dead" system fixed so you would then have a second "live" system for another room.

I want to upgrade from 2 channel to 5.1 channel, but... (Read details)?

Q) I have a Sony Mini Hi-Fi HMC-VX550 system (3 VCD changer (NO MP3 and DVD!), Tuner Band, 2 channel output with 2x5" woofers + 2x5" subwoofers in 2 wooden enclosures). As it doesn't support MP3 and DVD; and when I heard music on 5.1 ch with Dolby® Pro Logic II, I went mad for it. and so, we bought a new Philips DivX player with 5.1 ch output. But it doesn't have a built-in amplifier. Now, I'm willing to buy a 5.1 channel home theatre system. But my mum just loves that Sony and keeps saying, "it has got GOOD quality, it's Sony and we have bought it so expensive (abt 20,000Rs./600$, 5 years back!) and I won't let you throw it off, bla bla." So, my question is, what shall I do now?! I seriously don't wanna throw off the Sony Player and I'd like to use its V-Sync amplifier and GOOD quality speakers. But what about 5.1 ch??! Shall I get 3.1 ch home theatre (is it available?!) for centre and rear L/R + 1 subwoofer and attach the Sony to front L/R?? Please help me out! Thanks!

A) Many companies used to make 3 channel add-ons for your stereo system that worked on a tape 2 loop. I haven't heard of these in a long time though. This kind of processor and three speakers would likely exceed the cost of your mini-system anyway. Your only real option is to replace this system and move the Sony into some other room such as a bedroom (you would not get much for it if you try to sell it). Since it sounds as though you are working with a very limited budget your best option would be to start comparing the sound of different home theater in a box surround sound systems. Since you need to convince your mum regarding this upgrade I'll share with you my secret. I have gradually upgraded my audio/video system over the years and have learned how to do so without getting in arguments with my wife. Here is my method: 1) Don't shock her with an upgrade. Start selling her on it. Find occasions to tell her about all of the benefits of such an upgrade without mentioning any idea of a purchase. 2) When watching a movie mention from time to time how much more enjoyable the experience would be with the upgrade. 3) Mention the social benefits of having a system that would be worthy of entertaining guests. 4) Keep this up until she gets sick of it. 5) Keep looking out for a really good bargain on your upgrade (internet sites are good for this). When you find one you like, tell her about it with great excitement as though you have found the deal of a lifetime. Be sure to do this when she is in a very good mood. 6) Ask her what she thinks. She will probably say something positive. Then follow up with "I think we should get it then." Good luck. I'm pulling for you.

how can i connect 5.1 surround speakers to my HD TV?

Q) i recently bought an evesham sound stage which has built in speakers. i managed to connect it to my 32 inch samsung tv for stereo using the RCA cables (red and white). i cant figure out how to connect the 6 pins for 5.1 surround though. the other end of the cable has a circular 8pin which goes into the soundstage so im wondering hojw i can get the surround sound? do i need to buy an amplifier? a dvd player? vhs? or is there any adapter that can convert the 6 surfround pins to RCA that can go into the tv? i ap[preciate any help. thanks

A) That cable is for audio sound that is coming from an amplifier that uses 6 discrete channels to output the sound. The amp in your TV set obviously doesn't do that (most do not). You really don't need to use that cable at all. If you have a high-end DVD player, it might have 6 discrete outputs (mine does) and you would use that to hook your DVD player up to your evesham. For the TV, just connect with the RCA cable and the evesham will convert the sound into a "type" of surround sound. That system is an fair sound for home theater if you don't want to be worried by selecting many components, wiring, extra speakers throughout the room, etc. It will not provide the maximum theater sound experience however, no matter how you hook it up.

What are the bare minimum cable requirements for 5.1 dolby surround?

Q) I just bought a Dolby 5.1 compatable home theatre surround system. I was wondering if the cables I am using will allow for the surround sound to work properly. It's a pretty cheap system, and it doesn't allow for video to go throught the Amp, and then to the TV. So the audio must come directly from the TV. My setup is this: DVD player to TV with AV cables (Yellow, Red, White) TV Audio to Amplifier with AV cables (Red, White) I'm not sure if AV cables are the proper term, but it's the older style Audio/Video cables with the Yellow for video and the red and white for Audio. Will the surround sound still work when I put a DVD in with 5.1 compatable audio?

A) If you connect the red and white audio from the dvd player to the receiver, it wont decode Dolby Digital 5.1. It will decode Dolby Pro-logic and /or Dolby Pro-logic II. To get DD 5.1, you have to use the digital audio out from the dvd player (coaxial or fiber optic). If your dvd doesn't have these outputs, then just use the red/white for regular Pro-Logic. If you are using a cable box or satellite receiver, then connect the audio out from that to the receiver. User digital audio outs if they have it, otherwise, use the red/white audio outs. If you are not using cable box or satellite, then just connect the audio out from the tv to the receiver. All video from dvd, cable box, or satellite will go directly to tv.

pls tell me how 2 connect 5.1home theatre systm to a dvd player which has two audio outputs without amplifier

Q) dvd player philips 3005k. has two audio outputs and one digial output. as of now only two speakers will work with this. how to connect 5.1 channel home theatre system effctively to this?

A) You need to do two things. First, connect the digital output of the DVD player to the home theater system. The other "2 output" audio (I am assuming one is red and one is white) will not give you 5.1, only the single-plug digital output can do that. That output will be either optical or coaxial. Make sure you plug that into a digital input on the home theater system. Then as a next step, you may need to go into your DVD player menu and make sure that the "digital output" format is set to BITSTREAM rather than "PCM". This is a step that is often overlooked and some players do not make this the default. Once you have done this and set the receiver/home theater system to the digital input you used, you should see it start to decode the 5.1 formats. Make sure a DVD is playing at the time you test to make sure there is a 5.1 signal coming through the digital output. Good luck
