Questions and Answers

which type of camcorder is best? minidv? dvd? or HDD??

Q) i want to buy a brand new camcorder between £200-£300. but confused about the type. which one would be best at this price range. my need is simply to record family holidays and parties, etc..

A) I would say dvd, if you're not so interested in editing footage. HDD and miniDV all involve fiddling around with wires and transferring, so at least with dvd it's ready to watch or store straight away, plus blank dvd's arent that expensive. I have a miniDV, but I tend to cut and edit footage before saving it onto the hard disk on my PC, but this is very time consuming so I would definitely suggest dvd.

which camcorder would be best for us? please suggest?

Q) we are a family of four. we make journeys regularly in the country and often have parties and gatherings at home. we are looking for a good camcorder which satisfies the following basic needs: should be able to record a full length birthday party, or any other home occasion should be compact and slim, so that our hands are comfortable should be able to record and play fairly easily should zoom in at least from place to a distance quite far away. need not have to be extra modern, simply for use with family gatherings and outings. with basic resolution and zoom capacity. that's all i need a camcorder for. please suggest any good company and the focal lengths, etcetc.. i need

A) while I don't have a specific model to recommend becuase there a TON out there, I suggest sony, cannon or jvc models. If you are going to put them on DVD with your computer, I'd get a camera with a hard drive instead of tapes. That way you don't have to carry or buy them. you can get models that hold up to 9.5 hours at a time. And they are lighter, and have less moving parts than a model that has the tape ejector and tape heads.

Which is the best HD DVD Camcorder under £1,000?

Q) I am looking to buy a new camcorder and have heard that the Sony is the best, is this the case ?

A) The High Definition HDD Handycam HDR-SR1E is probably the best for that price, it also has a 30gb hard disk drive. As far as camcorders go, I have always found Sony to be the best. See link below:

Which is the best camcorder out now.?

Q) I want a video recorder for my hols next year. Which is best VfM and what is the best format. You can buy them which record straight onto a small dvd can't you? Thanks

A) I too recommend the JVC with 30GB HD camcorder but that will run you about $700.00. The next brand would be any modern Panasonic MiniDV camcorder. Avoid those that write to a DVD. They are slow.

which sony camcorder is the best. the sony DCR SR32E, DCR SR33E or the DCR SR72E.?

Q) and please can you say why you think it is the better one. thank you

A) I use a Sony Handycam DCR-HC35, which is excellent, it is fairly small, and light weight, it has a 800x digital zoom, the results are terrific and as you are a lady you can put in your handbag, No Problem. P.S it is easy to use and understand.

Which is the best camcorder?

A) It depends what you want. First question is what kind of media do you want... DVD, Mini-DV, or Hard Drive? The Mini-DVD can go directly from the camcorder into a DVD player, but those mini-DVD's dont last forever, so you have transfer them to a more perminate media eventually if you dont want to lose your movies over the years. The mini-DVD's are not cheap either. They also are more of a pain if you want to transfer the movie to a computer. The video quality is the lowest in DVD camcorders because of compression. The Hard Drive camcorders have come a long way in just the past year alone. They have come down in price, and they have more features. They are great for transfering movies to a computer. The movie will always have to be downloaded to a computer or some other media, as there is no removable media in the camera. You lose some quality to compression. They are great for transfering to your computer for video editing. Mini-HD camera's are pretty much the last of the tape camcorders. People think tape technology is outdated, but these are still good camcorders. They are capable of the highest quality video, and they record ditially to the tape. They are also great for video editing on your computer. The best brands for camcorders is Panasonic and Sony. Panasonic has 3-CCD camcoders which record each color seperately, giving beautiful, true color. Sony uses larger CCD's, still giving great quality. Without knowing what you want to use your camcorder for, and what your level of skill is, you are asking a hard question. You can read great reviews and see rankings at: www.camcorderinfo.com

Which is the best DVD Camcorder?

A) The Sony HDR-UX1 is the top DVD camcorder according to camcorderinfo.com's list of top camcorders of 2006: http://www.camcorderinfo.com/content/CamInfo-Selects-2006.htm

Im going to buy a camcorder which format is best video quality..mini DV,HD,SD,...etc?

A) I would suggest you hang fire until the next generation appears. Two different formats are struggling for supremacy. Tough if you buy now and find your camcorder is obsolete within a few months. Similar to the battle between Betamax and VHS.

which format is the best for a camcorder?

Q) 8 mm, digital 8, dvd, hard drive, hi8, internal memory, micro mv, minidv

A) At any given price range miniDV is superior to both dvd and hard disk in terms of quality. The resolution on tape is typically above 500 lines, compared with 400 for DVD (the UK standard is 576 lines, so in effect you are very close to broadcast) The AVI compression system is based on single frame colour sampling and is of a higher quality than the MPEG2 type favoured by dvd and hard disk cameras. Zooms and pans can stutter with DVD and HDD cameras because the data is compressed accross a stream of frames. Even if you record in long play mode the compression is fixed, again unlike DVD or HDD. MiniDV tapes are now very inexpensive, so much so that reusing them is almost academic, with miniDV you have an archival copy which at around £1.20 a tape you don't have to record over. MiniDV camcorders are typically cheaper spec for spec than either DVD or HDD cameras and are more compact than DVD camcorders. MiniDV camcorders (albeit not ones costing £150) are regularly used in broadcast. All miniDV camcorders use firewire these days, so as long as your computer has a firewire port and either iMovie or Windows Movie Maker, you are ready to go. Even if you decide to go down the HD route, ape based cameras are still better.

In your opinion which is the best camcorder (reasonably priced please)?

Q) Thank you for your valid comments. I will have to think this one through.

A) I'm afraid there's no right answer to that question - it all depends on what you want to do with it and how much you're prepared to spend.

best camcorder?

Q) Hey I was wondering what is the best type of camcorder now adays? I am buying a new one since my sigital camera is getting sort of beat up, and I was wondering: Should I buy another digital camcorder? 8 track? Or should I get one with a hard drive? Thanks.

A) This all depends on how you want to use the features. If you want some video with a lot of pictures, get a camera such as the Canon S3IS which shoots high quality pictures, as well as video in stereo surround that is only limited in length to the size of your memory. For video, Hard Disk Drive (HDD) cameras are becoming popular, but in most cases, you tend to lose quality in exchange for the HDD feature. The recommendation of the 3CCD lens cameras is correct, this will give you the highest quality video because of three lenses focusing each color onto one instead of one lens focusing for all colors. JVC has quite a few cameras in their Everio line. I would compare JVC, Panasonic and Sony to match the features you want with the cost you can afford. As well, go to your local camcorder dealer and test them out before making a purchase. Lastly, your final choice depends on your familiarity with using the camera. If computer video editing is not for you, a DV tape or DVD disc camcorder may work best for you, as you won't need to make the movie on the computer and then transfer it to tape or DVD. The Everio camcorders have an optional DVD burner that attaches to the bottom of the camcorder to allow you to make movies to DVD on the spot. In the end, for best quality, make sure it is either High-Definition (HD, not HDD) or 3-CCD. Good luck!

Best camcorder?

Q) Ok, I'm kind of new to the world of camcorders since the last one I bought was just a standard vhs tape kind so it's been a while. I need some opinions and info on the best camcorder to get my hubby for christmas. Do you recommend the hi8 tape, mini dvd, or regular dvd type? Any additional info on the different types would be great. Also, where did you purchase--I'm thinking overstock.com but not sure. Just please, someone educate me on this!

A) The above is good, but then you have to record it onto some other media anyway. Either a (full size) DVD or VHC-C. VHS-C will work in an adapter you can put in your VCR. No other size can.

Q) I want a new camcorder for christmas. Ill be filming extremem sports. It needs to be under 400 dollars(ebay), So far Im looking at a optura 10. Any other ideas?

A) Take a look at the PV-GS85 from Panasonic. It's about $244 on amazon, and it's got great zoom, and shoots widescreen! I think it's great, I actually own a camera very similar to this one. Best Camcorder?

Q) I am planning on buying a camcorder. I will be using it for making home videos. Do you have any suggestion on one that has good quality images, good zoom, good storage and is affordable.

A) Dependant on what you want in terms of storage. Heres some tips for you on storage: Most reliable storage is miniDV tape and is relatively cheap, about $10 per tape for 60 mins on best quality(SP) and 90 mins on long play (LP). I use one of these and its awesome. Then there is DVD, crap and unreliable, espeically when wanting to make home movies and they are expensive. HDD, good idea, BUT, still in the early stages and are easy to damage as the HDD are really fragile and if you are rough with gear, then forget it, they damage easily.. Get a 3 CCD camera, they offer you both better colour and picture quality than the standard video cameras, that basically means it captures the colours on 3 separate panels, red, green, blue, rather than all on one. Avoid, digital zoom, it means nothing and you can do it on video editing software programs, while optical zoom is the one you need to look out for. Optical physically zooms in closer and does not affect the quality. I recommend Canon video cameras to people as they are easy to use, have very good picture quality and are very affordable. Go to the website, depending on your country, like www.canon.com for america. I use www.canon.co.nz for New Zealand. Look in video cameras, they have cameras with 20 x optical zooms, which are really good.. Good luck..

Which Camcorder is best?

Q) I'm looking at the Canon ZR series. Which one do you think is best? Or would you go with a different camcorder? If so, what camcorder would you recommend? (Mini DV)

A)

Which camcorder is the best? The Sony DCR H24 or the Canon MV890?

Q) Which of these camcorders is the best? Or are the alternative cameras in the same budget range that are better? Basically I want to spend around £150 on a decent DV camcorder. I would like it to have as many features as possible, allow expansion(i.e. external mic, filters, lenses), be fairly easy to use, but also powerfull, fairly compact / lightweight, have a good night shot mode and/or be good in low light conditions. Thats all!

A) SONY is best... I have used canon and then i had to return it.. the motor sound is very irritating after 6 mnths or so..

I want to buy the best digital camcorder, with a $399 max. How do I know which is the best quality camcorder?

Q) I am one of the three founders of a soon-to-be Youtube t.v. company Needlestone. We have made the pilots to many series on one digital camcorder. We were going to film using Super 8, but since out company is very small with no money, (highschool), we cannot afoord it, even with part time jobs, which would leave us no time to film. So I want a digital camcorder, so we have two, but I want to know what features should I be looking for for the best quality camcorder. Jacob

A) With digital camcorders you have three options: DVD-R, DV Tape, or Hard Drive. DV has the best quality and will give you the most options for the price. I just bought a hard drive camcorder and it is very nice but expensive. The hard drive provides quicker transfer to the computer and I don't have to buy tapes, but it is still a relatively new technology. I would suggest a mini DV camcorder given the price. From what I hear Panasonic and Sony have the best picture quality. I know the Sony mini DV I have has a nice quality and is fairly inexpensive. The biggest thing I would suggest is to do a little research and decide which features are important to you. There are several review sites that are very helpful.
