Questions and Answers

Camera lens?

Q) Taking into account build quality, sharpness, picture quality and price. What would be the best brand of lens to buy for a Canon DSLR? Specifically the Canon 30D. I did some research and it seems that Canon makes the best lenses, but what about big third party developers like Sigma and Tamron?

A) I'm going to say something that is both unpopular and also will burst your bubble... stay away from generics! They are nothing more than cheaper products made of cheaper materials (like the glass formula) in order to compete with the superior brand names. I made that mistake once but ONLY ONCE and I learned my lesson. That was a number of years ago when my best friend's son graduated from high school and he played his last baseball game with his team... I took a few portraits and some action shots and to my horror, ALL of the images taken with the generic lens (70-300mm f/4-5.6D) looked nice at 4 1/2" x 6" enlargement but were so "soft" and fuzzy around the edges at 6" x 8" and beyond... but not the portraits taken with the Nikkor lenses. I got rid of the lens at a loss (used that one time only) and went out and got the Nikkor lens, which I still own and use, and have never had any issues with the images or the focusing... period. Lenses normally outlast camera bodies. So, if you can't afford a particular new lens, consider getting it used from a reliable camera shop (like www.keh.com) and save yourself grief, worry and money! In the long run, you will find that you get what you pay for. Would you put some cheap "on sale" tires on a Bently or Rolls-Royce or BMW...? The same applies to a good camera! Your images will only be as good as the lens you use; after all, they are what lets the image travel onto the sensor! In my personal opinion, generic lenses are OK for those once in a while photographers or for vacationers but not for avid amateurs, semi-pros or for pro photographers; that's just MY personal opinion, by the way. Good luck and best wishes.

Canon digital - Sigma lens compatability?

Q) How can you tell what Sigma lenses will work on a Canon digital camera if you havn't the camera with you. Is there a list of serial numbers that will help to avoid buying the wrong lens. I know UC lenses only fit film cameras.

A) sigma lenses for canon cameras should say they have "canon fitment", or are Canon AF They do the same lense in versions to fit many cameras... so make sure that you are getting one specifically for a canon camera.

Is warranty valid in Canada on new camera lens purchased online in the United States?

Q) I want to purchase a Sigma camera lens online through a large American store. The price is much lower than I can get here but I'm afraid that the 7 year warranty may not be valid in Canada.

A) I think it will help if you call the company and ask them!

will a canon lens work on a sigma camera?

A) You'll have to convert the lenses to the SA lens mount, or use them with a converted TC (and accept the light loss).

looking to buy camera lens 18-200mm. Which is best Sigma or Tamron?

A) I have used both Tamron and Sigma lenses for 35mm film, the last was a Sigma aspherical zoom. either brand provides quality optics and economical pricing. the 18-200mm versions are comparible, and both are suited for digital photography only, not 35mm.

Can I put the lens from my Sigma SA7 (film camera) on my Digital EOS 350D?

Q) or is there a difference between Digital and film lenses?

A) In short: No. The mounts are similar but not identical, and no adapter exists to mate the Sigma SA mount to Canon EF. Adapters exist for some classic lenses (mostly Contax, Zeiss, etc) to mate to Canon, but are only available because these "old-school" wide angle lenses often exceed the image quality available in modern wide angle Canon lenses (a known weakness in the Canon lineup). Further, when a lens is adapted, is loses ALL automatic functions (Autofocus, etc). The Sigma SA mount is an electronic mount, which means that if it WAS hypothetically adapted, you would lose the ability to control aperture size. You would only be able to shoot "wide open." So even if you wanted to construct a custom adapter (a timely and difficult proposition) the end results would not be worth the trouble.

Which digital SLR camera bodies will work with a 1998 model 35mm Sigma 28-200 K-mount lens?

Q) This lens is currently used on a 1998 model K-mount Ricoh 35mm camera. I have read that Pentax digital SLR bodies can work with most Pentax 35 mm lenses but can they work on K mount Sigma 35 mm lenses?

A) If its a K-mount lens it will work on any Pentax or Samsung DSLR. If the lens has an "A" on ita aperture collar you will get full functionality if it does not, you can still use aperture priority and full manual modes, but you can no longer use automatic (picture) modes.

Can I use a new sigma 28-300mm f3.5-6.3 dg macro for canon af lens with an old eos 500?

Q) I have recently been given access to a new sigma 28-300mm f3.5-6.3 dg macro lens, a digital canon eos 400d and the 18-55mm lens that it came with . I have had a canon eos 500 for ages now and used it primarily with the standard lens that it came with. I want to know whether or not I would be able to use the sigma lens and the 18-55mm lens from the new digital camera with my old canon eos 500? it may sound strange but i like my old camera and want to continue using film, but would like to know if i can take advantage of these other lenses with my old camera. the lenses would be on loan to me and i love my old camera so would not want to damage either. Anyone able to offer me some expert advice?

A) All EOS compatible lenses will work on all EOS cameras ... except there are some digital only lenses where vignetting will occur if the lens is used on digital cameras with image sensors larger than APS-C size or 35mm SLR cameras ... and sometimes for "arts" sake, that can be a cool tool

Have a canon digital rebel camera. looking for a good all around lens. 18-200mm Lens. Tarmon or sigma? Help

A) Well Sigma has a slower autofocus than Tamron's 18-200mm. But you will comprise imagine quality for optical zoom. I would choice Tamron in this cause.

Does the brand of the lens for DSLR cameras really matter? If so, are Sigma lens any good?

Q) Also, is a Nikon D70 with a Sigma 18-50 and 55-200mm lens kit for about 700 bucks without tax a good deal? I am sure it is, but I just want to get other people's opinions. Thank you.

A) Sigma is a well-known aftermarket lens maker. You can not say that they are all good or all bad, though. Go here and see what they say about specific lenses: http://www.popphoto.com/lensIndex/ Also, since you are using a Nikon, you will find that Ken Rockwell reviews other brands of lenses for Nikon cameras. http://www.kenrockwell.com

what is different of a good or not so good camera lens?

Q) Hi, I am using xti. and I am trying to get another lens other than the kit lens. what is different of a good or not so good camera lens? I am looking out the sigma 24-70mm F/2.8 ex . it this a good lens?

A) Canon Lenses and Reviews http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Canon-Lenses/ (See "Recommendations" on this page) http://www.photo.net/canon/#lense http://www.wlcastleman.com/equip/reviews/index.htm http://www.photozone.de/active/news/index.jsp http://www.bobatkins.com/photography/index.html http://www.fredmiranda.com http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/forum.asp?forum=1029 The Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM (28-135 equiv.) (April 2007-$515) is a good "walk around" lens at a good price. http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelDetailAct&fcategoryid=149&modelid=10511 http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-S-17-85mm-f-4-5.6-IS-USM-Lens-Review.aspx I am not familiar with the particular Sigma lens you are asking about. Go to B&HPhoto.com and look it up. They post user reviews on lenses. I'm sure you can search for "Sigma 24 70 review" in any internet search engine and find several reviews.

I am listing a high-speed camera lens on Ebay. What info would interest potential bidders? see details?

Q) I have no experience with photography equipment. The case is in perfect condition. On the lens, it says, "Sigma high-speed zoom....multi-coated 1:3.5 f=80-200mm....215565 lens made in Japan...other numbers in green, the words macro and reproduction ratio.......for Nikon". There's lines and symbols.I did a search of Sigma and found a site with info on different size lenses. The closest to this was 80-400mm.I don't need to know what these numbers mean, just which info is important? Thank you.

A) The key markings on a lens for 35mm cameras or most film cameras for that matter would be the manufacturer and the focal length. In your case the maker of the lens seems to be "Signma" and the focal length is 80-200 which makes it a "telephoto" or "zoom" lens. This is a fairly standard lens that is desired by many photogs. Of course, with digital cameras now becoming so inexpensive, it is harder to sell traditional photography parts and accessories. When I bought a telephoto lens for my 35mm camera 15 years ago it cost me $399 for just the lens...now I can buy a digital camera with way better optics for even less. Still...a lens in good shape will be worth something to somebody. Good luck with your lens! To answer the question, you could probably sell it using the info: Sigma camera lens, 80-200 telephoto, fits Nikon or similar camera body.
